Paraiba tourmaline owes its name to the place in Brazil where the gemstone was first found in 1989. Although Paraiba is a recent discovery, the mines in Brazil are already exhausted. Today, copper-containing tourmalines are also found in Mozambique and Nigeria, always in limited quantities and of varying quality. The worldwide rising demand for the colorful gemstone makes Paraiba even rarer and more precious than diamond.
