Breguet, Chronometer-maker to the French Royal Navy

Throughout his career, A.-L. Breguet demonstrated his exceptional mastery of time measurement. Renowned throughout Europe, he found an active admirer in King Louis XVIII who offers him recognitions and honors.

In 1814, the king of France appoints him a member of the Bureau des Longitudes in Paris, a body dedicated to the advancement of the various branches of astronomy and their applications to geography, navigation and geodesy (calculating the shape and area of the earth to determine the exact position of geographical points).

As an extension of this distinction, the king awarded Breguet the official title of "Chronometer-maker to the French Royal Navy” in 1815.

True Solar time and Mean Solar time

Since antiquity, the sun has been used as the basis of time. However, the visible motion of the sun – the True Solar time – is irregular.

With the improvement of timekeeping precision, True Solar time has been replaced by Mean Solar time, whereby each day has the same duration of 24 hours. The latter can have a discrepancy with True Solar time ranging from minus 16 minutes to plus 14 minutes.

The Equation of Time

This complication shows the difference between mean solar time (corresponding to civil or standard hours and minutes), and true solar time (meaning the actual solar hours and minutes).

Precious for astronomers and navigators, the equation of time piqued the interest of all great watchmakers of A.-L. Breguet's time. Moreover, the most elaborate models came from the Breguet workshops in Paris.

The running equation of time

Rare and fascinating, the running equation of time displays civil time and true time simultaneously, with the help of two distinctive minutes hands.
